The Night Tangler: Lurker in the Lace folklore booklet
by Daisy Jordan & Ulysses Black, 2024

An original zine booklet based around the folklore of bobbin lacemaking - focussing on the mysterious Old Bob, the Night Tangler, the mysterious entity that lurks in the gaps in the lace. I made this book with my partner Ulysses Black, in part to collect all of our sprawling ideas and inspiration when we were trying to make a puppet show based on lacemaking folklore. Old Bob made himself known to us while we were in the depths of confusion, tangled in the web of too much information while in the research phase of our project. The Night Tangler is an antagonist - he creeps in through the holes left by those things that are unfinished; those threads that are left undone. He is attracted by the sound of a falling pin. And if the lacemakers are not tidy, diligent and organised in their work, he tangles the threads of the lace and steals - even eats - the pins.

This book is packed full of information about the creepy lace devil, and full colour images of original artwork made by us.

Like lace itself, the threshold between history and myth can be a delicate one, and it is in this space that folklore is woven. We will leave you to decide which of the various lore is "authentic", and which is imagined...

The blurb on the back of the book reads:

"Revealed for the first time in one place, the enchanting folklore surrounding one of mythology's most mysterious antagonists...
Though a dying tradition, hand made lace was once a flourishing cottage industry whose craftsfolk were entirely immersed within their art, ensnared by the threads of their work, and through which many a curious tale and mythic history was spun.
In this booklet, artists and researchers Daisy Jordan and Ulysses Black weave together the many different strands of lore to present this first singular vision of the thrice cursed Night Tangler, Old Bob, Old Smudge... the Lurker in the Lace."

This zine has 36 pages and is professionally printed in full colour, on good quality paper. It is A5 sized, and has a landscape format.
