7th April - Starting work!
I'm now settled into my studio in Blanca. It's a tiny abandoned peasant house called Casa Jasmin, and is a little rabbit warren of little rooms and nooks and crannies. I immediately wanted this to be my workspace, if I was allowed, as I could see so many little spaces for puppets or little creatures to occupy.
I felt a bit lost and overwhelmed when I first got into the space, so I started off doing the kind of thing you do at primary school - the classic “making rubbings of the textures in my surroundings with wax crayons”. It helped get a feel for the place, quite literally! I also did a weird drawing of a devil in the space!
Then I added some watercolour, like a wax resist painting, before cutting a paper macaque monkey out of the paper (of course?!). I then put the macaque in different situations in the space, and filmed some encounters with the monkey glove puppet and the paper monkey, and generally experimented with making little films of the glove puppets (see links below!). It’s a start at least!
