Giclee print of original painting - The Duchess - Snub-nosed monkey with lemur stole, Victorian

£30.00
sold out
A high quality giclee print of an original acrylic painting, depicting a black snub-nosed monkey with a red ruffed lemur stole.

Here is the duchess, wrapped in the stole of a red ruffed lemur, puffing away on her cigarette, golden teeth and rings glinting. She is the image of excess – her skull-like face and pink lips reminiscent of Pete Burns in his infamous “gorilla” coat (it was in fact, a colobus coat). Who or what is the lemur to the duchess? A well preserved corpse, a victim of the merciless fashion industry? Or a beloved pet? Either way, it curls snake-like around her neck, echoing the serpent which tempted Eve and made her self-conscious. Lost paradise, the jungle, is nothing but a distant memory which she refuses to acknowledge – nothing more than a painted veneer on a folding dressing screen behind which lies nothing but the black, inescapable void. The duchess turns her back on it, blinded by her material decadence. The fox lemur, dead or alive, we cannot be sure, gazes on, as though yearning for a puff on her cigarette, as if that may, just for a moment, ease the unbearable pain of existence. Or non-existence, as the case may be. So many questions. So little answers.

This print is part of a series of limited edition prints portraying monkeys of various species, in human-like roles and Victoriana settings.

The image itself measures 39.5 x 26cm approx and is printed on oversized-A3 Hahnemuhle matt paper (48 x 33cm approx). It would look lovely framed in a vintage gilt frame, or a simple dark wooden frame, picked up from your local flea market or boot fair!

This edition is limited to 200 prints.
The images on this listing show both the original scanned painting, and the giclee print version (with the white paper border).
